Really interesting piece about film and television criticism by Emily Nussbaum, in which she discusses her love for Buffy at length.

Just saying hello!  And whinging a little, because I'm once again in the midst of home reno disarray.  Everything is covered in plaster dust, and all the furniture is still in the bedroom.  I am starting a trial tomorrow, and these are not optimum conditions for working, so I'm giving up and planning on getting to the office by 7:00 tomorrow.

On the other hand, I went to the Westminster Dog Show Agility Competition yesterday, and the dogs were fantastic.  Also, the Olympics are happening, and I love the Olympics in the corniest way possible, although I'm a bit conflicted since we probably shouldn't be participating at all.

Most of all, though: SHERLOCK!  Which I won't discuss in detail, except to say that I don't think the love story between them is subtextual any longer; or if it is, it's so barely beneath the surface as to be inconsequential.  If these characters weren't same-sex, I can't imagine anyone would doubt that this is a romance that's been developing, and simmering, and is coming to a boil.  All of which makes me incredibly happy!!  And in celebration, instead of doing work, I'm going to watch Billy Wilder's The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes, which I haven't seen since I was a kid, because of what Mark Gatiss says about it.  And I'll also offer a Sherlock rec: Luminosity, by what_alchemy.  Short, and beautiful, and touching.

I saw this meme somewhere a while ago:  List the names of all the files in your WIP folder, and offer up a sentence from any of them if requested.

I'm omitting drabbles, since there would just be too many.  Also, I'm using bold italics with stars** for the ones I'm going to finish someday if it kills me; bold italics for the ones I think there's at least some chance of finishing; and regular italics for ones I think about finishing, but probably won't. The rest are most likely permanently abandoned.

There's a homeless man who's been living in my neighborhood for the last couple of months.  He's very nice, and every time he sees me, he says, "Hey, silver fox," which never fails to amuse me and brighten my day.  It's been very, very cold for the last few weeks, and I noticed he hasn't been wearing gloves, so a few days ago I gave him a pair that I had ordered on line in the wrong size and never bothered to return.  When I saw him today, he was wearing them tied around his knees, like kneepads.

Whatever works, I guess.

I was walking back to my office from court this morning, talking on the phone.  I was only about half a block away from the courthouse, which means that there were a lot of court officers and police in the area.  Suddenly, a guy in a down jacket and a hood ran by me, incredibly quickly.  He was really sprinting, which got my attention, and as he reached the corner, he passed a woman, snatched her purse, and ran down an alley.  I saw two detectives that I know, just standing on the corner, watching and doing absolutely nothing.  I was stunned, and began shouting to the person I was talking to, "These assholes just stood by and let a crime happen right in front of them," and I was gesticulating angrily in their direction.

And then someone yelled, "Cut!"

Yes.  There was a movie being filmed.  The cameras were down the alley and I hadn't seen them.  Needless to say, the detectives mocked me for the next few minutes.  Deservedly.

Pretty much the highlight of my day.

Here's some fic I read (actually, re-read) over the past week, which you might enjoy (if you haven't already):

1. A few days ago, I was going nuts looking for a particular story in which Spike discovers Xander practicing dirty talk, and then shows him how it's done.  Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rebcake for finding it.  It's Rehearsal, by [livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen, and it's as good as I remembered.

2. During the Fandom Snowflake Challenge, I recced a story by Anna S that people seemed not to have read before.  This is another story of hers that people may not have come across, because you really have to go hunting to find it.  It's actually a short three-part series of canon AU Spike/Wesley.    Incredible writing, heartachey, and hot.  But warning: Spike is damaged.

    First: http://eliade.livejournal.com/168541.html
    Second: http://eliade.livejournal.com/170156.html
    Third: http://eliade.livejournal.com/170327.html

3.  And in honor of episode 2 of Sherlock airing tonight (!!!), there's Five Years Prior by feverishsea.  I read this story for the first time about six months ago, and I keep coming back to it, again and again.  Told from Lestrade's POV, John and Sherlock meet as younger iterations of themselves.  It's a very special story -- the writing is excellent, the conceit and the progression of their relationship is believable and moving, but there's something more, too, and I'm not quite sure what, but it really got its hooks into me.

Have fun!

Note:  I'm posting this as part of my "posting every day in January" challenge to myself.  It's actually part of something larger that I've never finished (I discussed this piece a few days ago).  It was supposed to be a story showing scenes of the boys over time, and this was meant to be the first part.  I think it can stand on it's own as a pre-slash ficlet, so I'm not calling it a WIP.  So there.

I'm temporarily back in my apartment.  Kitchen floors are done -- beautiful-- but there is dust and debris everywhere. I'm in a cleaning frenzy that has been going on for about three hours so far, and it's not even close to clean in here.  Aargh!!

So I'm just gonna give you a quick best-story-I-heard-today:

Have you seen the new HBO series Looking? If not, it's about three gay male friends in San Fransisco, and it's directed by Andrew Haigh, who directed the movie Weekend.  Weekend is about two gay men who meet for a casual hook-up, and end up connecting emotionally.  I had mixed feelings about the movie -- I thought some of the dialogue about gay issues felt a bit forced, but I thought there were a lot of moments that felt very real, and the sex scenes seemed both sexy and realistic.  So I've been looking forward to seeing this new series.

I watched the first episode just now, and sensed the faint stirrings of fannishness.  It's a pilot, so of course there's a lot of setting up who the characters are, etc., but I think the potential for something good is there.  I felt a zing of excitement at the episode's final shot.

Try it!  And if you've seen it, what do you think?
