It's nuts. That crane has been there all week, and it's the highest crane I've ever seen, and you just didn't want to go anywhere near it. There was a mild snow storm this morning, and I guess it was windy and they were trying to secure it? Which apparently did not work.
The snow has been forecast for days, why didn't they secure it yesterday at the very least. (heck the pole of an outdoor umbrella in our yard snapped today from the weight of the snow. I would think something like a crane they'd think to secure or lower in preparation.)
That's horrible for the person killed! It's just amazing that there were not more fatalities/injuries.
Private contractor. I guess a lot of different agencies are investigating. No answers yet. but there's just so much crazy construction going on, and it's NYC, so there's nowhere to build but up. It's too much.
Last time I visited NYC was two years ago and - I'm not even sure that "up" is a possibility anymore given the density of the city, and maybe this is evidence?
I'm sure there will be months of litigation, finger-pointing and passing the buck. None of which brings back the victims or comforts their families.
It's miraculous that more people weren't hurt. It's an extremely busy block, and it happened right at rush hour. They don't even know if we'll be allowed back into the building by Monday. So scary.

Date: 2016-02-06 01:08 am (UTC)That's INSANE. Was this crane the state's or a private contractor's? Who's to blame here for the immense stupidity?
