My office this morning

Fatal crane collapse directly in front of my office this morning. We have been evacuated. Everyone I know is (luckily) fine.images

First of all, OMG glad you are okay!

Secondly, I have cousins who live in NY and work in NYC. Where in NYC did this happen?

[identity profile] baudown.livejournal.com 2016-02-05 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Very few people were actually injured, so I'm sure your family is okay. It happened in Tribeca, on Worth Street.

[identity profile] ride-4ever.livejournal.com 2016-02-05 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Whew. Okay. You are safe and my cousins are safe and your co-workers are safe.

So, did "fatal" mean fatal for the crane?

[identity profile] baudown.livejournal.com 2016-02-05 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
No. One person was killed, 3 injured. So sad.

[identity profile] ride-4ever.livejournal.com 2016-02-05 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Sad...and scary that equipment could fail like that.

[personal profile] kikimay 2016-02-05 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad that you're okay. WHAT THE HELL! How did that happen?

[identity profile] baudown.livejournal.com 2016-02-05 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's nuts. That crane has been there all week, and it's the highest crane I've ever seen, and you just didn't want to go anywhere near it. There was a mild snow storm this morning, and I guess it was windy and they were trying to secure it? Which apparently did not work.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2016-02-05 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The snow has been forecast for days, why didn't they secure it yesterday at the very least. (heck the pole of an outdoor umbrella in our yard snapped today from the weight of the snow. I would think something like a crane they'd think to secure or lower in preparation.)

That's horrible for the person killed! It's just amazing that there were not more fatalities/injuries.

They say that city inspectors were there last night, approving an application to make the crane TALLER.

I can't believe more people weren't hurt. So lucky, but so needless and sad.

What the hell?

The fucking thing was already 570+ feet long.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2016-02-06 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
??????

That's INSANE. Was this crane the state's or a private contractor's? Who's to blame here for the immense stupidity?

[identity profile] baudown.livejournal.com 2016-02-06 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Private contractor. I guess a lot of different agencies are investigating. No answers yet. but there's just so much crazy construction going on, and it's NYC, so there's nowhere to build but up. It's too much.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2016-02-06 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Last time I visited NYC was two years ago and - I'm not even sure that "up" is a possibility anymore given the density of the city, and maybe this is evidence?

I'm sure there will be months of litigation, finger-pointing and passing the buck. None of which brings back the victims or comforts their families.

Oh my god! How terrifying! I am so sorry it was fatal, but so relieved it wasn't you or anyone you know. *hugs you*

*hugs you harder*

*so many hugs*

I can imagine. It's very eerie being so close to death.

That's just awful. That poor person who got killed. Who would ever expect a crane to fall on you. Glad you're OK.

[identity profile] baudown.livejournal.com 2016-02-06 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
It's so sad. What a crazy day.

Thank you. Yeah, its really a terrible, unnecessary tragedy.

I saw this on the news yesterday and was really shocked. And then to read your post really brings it home just how close it was.

Glad you are okay hon, and am very sad indeed for those who are not.

It's miraculous that more people weren't hurt. It's an extremely busy block, and it happened right at rush hour. They don't even know if we'll be allowed back into the building by Monday. So scary.
