I don't read the comics, but this new issue looks so Spander-rific that I'm tempted. Even the reviews are calling it a Spanderfest. Has anyone read it? What do you think? And do I need to have read the prior stuff to understand it?

I read or saw an interview with Nicholas Brendon telling how he is co-writing this one and the next issues as well and that the relationship between Xander and Spike is how he always imagined it would be which, according to him, is now how James Marsters sees it. JM wants Spike to be this bad boy but NB doesn't see Spike that way, and I got to say that I think NB has got it right. :)

I agree with NB too! It always seemed to me that if enough time passed, they'd actually become friends, even if grudgingly, and even if it took the form of banter and insults and name-calling. I love that scene in Triangle where they're playing pool and commiserating about women, and of course, the conversation where Xander lights Spike's cigarette (and pockets the Zippo!) in Spiral, and their working together the summer after The Gift. I think they were on their way to a kind of friendship before things went to hell in Season 6, and they were starting slowly back in that direction in Season 7. There's a really nice moment in LMPTM, before they put that thing in Spike's eye, when Xander gives him a little pat of reassurance. And of course, Spike saves him from Caleb. I still wish there had been a follow-up scene of Xander thanking him, and maybe acknowledging the soul.

I love and have noticed all the scenes you mention too - they were definitely moving Xander's and Spike's relationship towards a kind of friendship
