Pairing:  Spike/Xander

"Not bad," Spike says as the credits roll.  "Bit surprised that it's your cuppa tea."

"Um, hello?  Aliens?  Action?  Lou Gossett, Jr.?"

"Love story, innit."

Xander's indignant.  "The hell it is!"

"Pair of poofters."

"Enemies," Xander enunciates stubbornly, "who become friends.  Enemy Mine."

"Enemy Mine," Spike replies, shifting emphasis.  "Classic, really.  Sniping and arguing, 'cause they can't face their feelings.  It's called subtext, lackbrain."

There's a pause.  Spike looks startled, then vaguely appalled.  Xander feels suddenly queasy.

"No, you're right," Spike allows, a hurried concession, his gaze focused on the TV.    "Subtext," he mutters, sounding defensive.  "Subtext's a funny thing."

Oh my, I can feel the discomfort from here. Very funny *g*

Hee! I was amused by the idea of them actually discussing slash!

Thank you!

Hahahaha! "The hell it is!"/"Pair of poofters." The voices, the attitude: perfect, awesome. Now I have to go watch the film.

A friend of mine is watching Buffy for the first time, and was talking all week about "Lovers Walk." So I've had Spike saying, "Love's a funny thing," in my head, and it came out here.

I loved Enemy Mine when it came out in the 80s, and even back then I recognized the subtext. I haven't seen it since, though, so I can't vouch for how well (or poorly) it holds up.

I just looked it up and saw the tagline, "Enemies because they were taught to be, allies because they had to be, brothers because they dared to be." and I can tell from that alone that it's gonna be awesome.

That tagline is the height of awesome. Only not so much with the "brothers" as I recall.

Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha! Go on guys, talk about the subtext more! I love it. ;-)

It's a meta-drabble!!

Oh, and excellent movie to chose. I love that one! ;-)

Me, too, but as I mentioned above, I haven't seen it since the mid-80s. I'm going to have to watch it again.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for letting me know.

I don't ship S/X but I LOVE suggestion and subtext in fics and the voices are just spot-on here. And I love metafic especially when it's funny.

"It's called subtext, lackbrain."

My favorite line here. And it reminds me of how it felt like pretty much every movie in the '80's, or at least the action movies, were dripping with m/m "subtext".

Well, being that you're not an S/X person, I'm extra happy that you read and liked this.

It's a long, twisty road that took me from Spuffy to Spander, and though I'll always have a place in my heart for Spuffy (especially if I'm watching seasons 5-7), I really, really love the boys together.

Thanks for the feedback!

That so could have come out of a script. Excellent.
