I'm kind of cranky with Matt Zoller Seitz because I don't care for his Mad Men reviews- pretentious and wrong-headed. However, I do agree with the thesis statement behind this article- BTVS is profoundly underrated precisely because of his abilities to cross-genres and even contradict how it crosses genre.
Albeit, it's a long way to describe BtVS as I do by borrowing one of its quotes- "Fly free little bird. You defy category." But then, I'm also someone who uses ten words when four will do.
I still can't believe Buffy lost to... Friday Night Lights???? WTF???? I have Vulture issues forever now. (Well, also because for some reason they think the uber-dull Frank on How to Get Away With Murder is hot...ewwww!!!!!)
Look, FNL is a good show. It's well-acted and well-written. But wow, not even in the same universe as BtVS in terms of scope and complexity and character exploration and development.
