I haven't mastered the trick either (clearly) so with one or two exceptions I really only write NC-17 on-screen if I think it's in some way essential to the plot. And even then, it's a lot milder (I think) than some of what I see elsewhere, and done with a lot of hand-waving and air-grasping while I try to hammer out the details of what word/expression to use to its best effect [watching me write is like watching an angry puppeteer without his tools].

I think your approach of practice makes perfect is a perfectly valid one - and... I think if you find someone you trust to read it and give you the god's-honest truth about it, that can help too. [Frankly - I could use that person too.] You're already a self-reflective writer, and because you are so focused on accuracy and conscientiousness with your characterization, and your phrasing is so beautifully clean, I have no doubt you'll get where you want to be.
