I agree that the cowardice/pretense line could apply to either of them -- no matter what they've accomplished, or how much time passes, that core insecurity remains a part of them both. But a Future!Spike might be even more hesitant to risk when it comes to love, because he knows his own history of presuming and demanding, and because he's been rebuffed and rejected so often. That was my thinking for this piece any way! So I needed Xander to be the brave one, in terms of taking that first step.
